Cougars (also known as mountain lions and pumas) are medium-sized competitors who will occasionally spawn and seek out food. When they aren't fighting for a meal, they are predators posing a danger to the pack's young offspring.

In WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, cougars return as competitors seeking to scavenge from and steal food resources, including carcasses and meat chunks. As predators, they are one of six potential hazards for the pack's litter.

Behavior (Modern)

Cougars are solitary ambush predators. As scavengers, they will naturally gravitate toward carcasses to fulfill their needs. Cougars will fight fiercely to protect their carcass, and may only flee if there are a number of wolves threatening it. They can be sometimes observed taking naps out in the open.

Cougars are known to hunt wolf pups. As an ambush predator, they will patiently wait before an opportunity presents itself. Once a wolf pup reveals itself and is unprotected, they will immediately sprint toward their prey. Despite their strength, they will quickly flee from a hunt if an adult wolf sprints and growls toward them.

Habitat (Modern)

Cougars currently appear in all three maps: Amethyst Mountain, Lost River, and Slough Creek.

Life stages & Behavior (Modern)

This section details the sex differences and life stages (age groups) for cougars. Currently, there exists only adult cougars in the game. In the game, it is currently unclear to differentiate between male and female cougars.

Scavenging Strategies (Modern)

Cougars represent a high threat level when they are found already feasting on a carcass. Cougars will not flee unless they are sufficiently scared. It is possible to defeat a cougar as a lone wolf with enough patience and health, however it will always prove challenging. On Accurate, a cougar with full health is practically impossible to scare away as a lone wolf.

It is however still possible to scare a cougar as a lone wolf without taking much damage. By biting the cougar and quickly letting go before damage is dealt to both parties, the player can ensure that they are not receiving damage while at the same time increasing the flight meter of the cougar. Note that stamina is still used for the initial bite. By repeating this type of biting and growling constantly, it is possible to scare away a cougar from a carcass on any difficulty with enough patience.

Scent (Modern)

Main article: Scent view#Anniversary Edition

In scent view, toggled by pressing the V key key, players can easily identify cougars by their camouflage green-spectrum scent trails. Like other NPCs, these entities and their tracks emit scent spores which follow the direction of the wind.

For controllers, scent vision is toggled via the Xbox Xbox Left Bumper button, or the PlayStation PlayStation L1 button button.

In WolfQuest: Classic, cougars are dangerous felids introduced in the 2.7.2 update. These big cats can be identified and located by their purple scent trail while in scent view, toggled by pressing the V key.

They are a dangerous competitor to player at carcass encounters. As a predator, they are one of five potential threats to young wolf pups.

Behavior (Classic)

While relaxing atop a rock, cougars pose no threat to the player and will merely watch the player, hissing only when approached and standing if the player comes too close to their perch. Like coyotes and bears, cougars have a chance of spawning as roaming predators to scavenge from unguarded carcasses.

They are passive towards players and their mate if distance is maintained and will wander seemingly with no objective while not in range of carcasses, however they will become aggressive if they are in close proximity to an elk or hare carcass in any condition, regardless of whether it spawned naturally during world generation or hunted by the player and their mate/a group of players.

Like Grizzly bears, a cougar will consume an entire carcass if left alone, so players shouldn't linger with the hope of a cougar suddenly abandoning its meal. When attacked, there is a 25% chance that a player's bite will chase away a cougar. However, caution is advised when harassing this felid; they can effortlessly deal heavy damage in quick succession.

Should the player succeed in chasing away a cougar, it will flee indefinitely until it despawns. There is a 50% chance of a cougar being spawned instead of a Grizzly bear.[citation needed]

Locations (Classic)

Known nodes for cougars.

Amethyst Mountain (Classic)

Cougar territories in Amethyst Mountain.

In Amethyst Mountain, there are three rocky outcrops to be found which are possible perch spawns, where it is possible for them to be observed basking or lounging their time away.

Slough Creek (Classic)

Cougar territories in Slough Creek.

In both seasons of the Slough Creek map, there are six rocky outcrops to be found which are possible perch spawns, where it is possible for them to be observed basking or lounging the time away.

They may also trespass into territory belonging to the player in order to harass the den site as potential predators to prey on pups.

Lost River

In Lost River, there are five rocky outcrops to be found which are possible perch spawns, where it is possible for them to be observed basking or lounging the time away.

Kill (Classic)

Cougars have no health cap and therefore can be killed, however this will require a lot of patience and effort; be warned that hunting these big cats is done at players' own risk. They are much faster than other predators including wolves which makes them difficult to kill. If a cougar stands its ground it will become quite ferocious and can deal heavy damage for each successful blow. A good strategy involves chasing a cougar towards a body of water. As cougars can't pass through water, they will rebound, allowing the player to attack them as they recoil from the water if the player has positioned their avatar correctly.[citation needed]

Note that this only applies to roaming cougars that have spawned in place of a grizzly bear. Cougars perching on rocky outcrops cannot normally be attacked or killed. This is intentional.

The carcass of a cougar cannot be consumed.

Cougars were first polled in the 2010 Big Ideas contest, where they lost to time, weather, sleeping and resting improvements. The submission was credited to Frodo1.

By the conclusion of the poll, cougars were in fifth place.[1]

Bugs

Anniversary Edition Bugs

Classic Bugs

  • It is occasionally possible for the player to be able to glitch their wolf onto perch rocks. Doing so while a cougar is spawned on a perch rock renders the cougar vulnerable to attack, though this variation lacks the scripts of its roaming counterpart, meaning it cannot attack the player.
  • There is an uncommon bug where a cougar can spawn inside the hitbox of a rock. Because lounging/perched cougars were designed to be an unreachable environmental object, they have no death animation and will loop their idle animation. They will not retaliate when attacked. If killed, they normally yield 350 experience points.
    • Note the ONLY way this can happen is by an incorrect spawn point: spawn inside or on the bottom of rocks. In some rocks where the hitbox is too large, they cannot be killed or clipped through.

Trivia

Anniversary Edition Trivia

  • The model in this game was made by GIM Studio after being commissioned by eduweb.
    • eduweb does not own this model outright due to the high costs associated with exclusive rights. An agreement between both parties allows GIM Studio retains the rights to sell this model to other developers, so it may appear in other games.
  • Cougars do not immediately kill a pup they have targeted. Instead, they will snatch up their target and flee while carrying it (the pup will take damage over time), giving the player a short window of opportunity to save their stolen offspring.
    • This grab-and-flee tactic is a trait shared by grizzly bears. Neither predator sees pups as a competitor to kill it on-the-spot.

Anniversary Edition & Classic Trivia

  • Cougars are commonly referred to by the name of "Ricky" by players. This nickname is unofficial.

Classic Trivia

  • The model used in this game was made by BennyG22, aka Phillip Guerrero.
  • They are the first large feline to be introduced in WolfQuest, and the first new predator since Legacy 2.5.1.
  • Like all puppy predators, a cougar who succeeds in reaching its target will kill a pup upon contact.
  • It is possible, if far enough from the distance at which the animal attacks and its position on the carcass, to eat the carcass and escape unharmed.
  • It is common for players to refer to a perched cougar as "rock kitty".
