The Life is Rough coats is a set of two coat packs, each containing five coat textures, all of which reuse existing coat textures. As the name of the packs suggest, the textures included display various forms of injury or affliction, including scars and mange. The latter is purely cosmetic and causes no negative effects to their wearer.
In WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, the Life is Rough coats sets reuse pre-existing coat textures, with tawny eye scar and gray nose scar having been updated to use their Original coat counterparts instead of their original Classic coat counterparts. These sets are included free in the base game and can be used by player-wolves. They will also appear on NPC wolves.

Trivia[]
- Textures in this pack reuse existing coats from the Blacktail Deer Plateau, Lamar Canyon, and original (replacing Classic in the modern game) coats.
- Mange is a skin disease or infection caused by sarcoptic mites.[2] It causes itchy skin lesions and hair loss.
- Thus the large patches of skin where there should be fur.
- It is a common misconception among players that the mange coats depict scars or burns.
- While mange can be lethal, it is possible for an affected wolf to recover.
Anniversary Edition Trivia
- Pups in the Anniversary Edition have a chance of inheriting any Life is Rough coat, even if the parents do not use a coat in the Life is Rough sets.[3] To give an example, two parents with the Original Gray coat may have a pup with the Life is Rough Gray nose scar coat.
- Odds of Life is Rough coats for pups were given a small nerf in 1.0.8r along with Buffy coat odds, and a small buff was applied to some of the other gray NPC variation coats.
- All swatches were updated in 1.1.0b to use the WQ3 adult wolf model instead of the outdated 2.7 adult wolf model thumbnails. The initial change was documented during public beta 16.
- Prior to 1.1.0b, although the injuries and afflictions in this pack were reapplied to coats that were updated for the WQ3 wolf model, the thumbnail icons had not been updated at all. It's possible this was low enough in priority that it could instead wait until the game was nearing the end of Early Access.
- Prior to 1.1.0b, datamining the game files revealed only two updated icons for the gray nose scar and tawny eye scar coats in the first pack. (Shown below.) For reasons still unknown to this day, the files themselves were never used in any public versions, and none of the other coats in either texture pack had updated icons.

Anniversary Edition and Classic Trivia
- All instances of mange — body modifier in Anniversary, and the coats in both Classic and the Anniversary Edition — are purely cosmetic. It has no negative effects on player or NPC wolves.
