Red foxes are the smallest adult canids in the game. They have dark red fur, black feet, a white muzzle, chest, underbelly, and tail tip.
In WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, the red fox appears as a scavenger. Although it is considered a competitor, it presents no threat to the player or their pack. They will do nothing to wolf offspring if their paths should happen to cross.
In WolfQuest: Classic, red foxes are passive predators introduced in the 2.7.2 update.[1]
There are three achievements associated with foxes. In Legacy versions of WolfQuest, foxes are absent. They do not appear in the wilderness, having never been implemented in the original game.
Scent
- Main article: Scent View#Anniversary Edition
In the Anniversary Edition's scent view, toggled by pressing the key, players can easily identify foxes by their conifer-spectrum scent trails, spores, and glow. Like other NPCs, these entities and their tracks emit scent spores which follow the direction of the wind.
For controllers, scent view is toggled via the Xbox button, or the PlayStation button.

Diet
In the Anniversary Edition, red foxes have a strong preference for carcasses in any condition, regardless of whether it is abandoned or occupied. When approached or confronted, they will briefly display an overhead conflict meter but it will not fight and will instead surrender and flee. Left alone or undisturbed, a fox will eat its fill before idling or curling up to sleep on the food source.
In Classic, a fox who has detected a carcass nearby will make a clear beeline towards it. Once there, it will consume from the carcass, even sharing with other NPCs. If the carcass is approached by wolves or already occupied by wolves, it will flee.
Prey
In the Anniversary Edition, red foxes may pursue, kill and consume snowshoe hares. The player-wolf may occasionally witness this or they may find evidence in the form of mingled footprint trails. They will not hunt ungulates.
As per their mousing behavior, it is implied that red foxes will also hunt mice and other underground rodents and insects that they might be able to detect. This behavior only exists as an animation; no such animals are actually implemented.
In Classic, foxes have not been observed to hunt ungulates or hares.
As per their mousing behavior, it is implied that red foxes will also hunt mice and other underground rodents and insects that they might be able to detect. In single-player, witnessing a fox performing its mousing behavior for the first time in winter unlocks the achievement Deep Dive, and witnessing it for the first time in summer unlocks the achievement Pouncer. This behavior only exists as an animation; no such animals are actually implemented.
Habitat
In the Anniversary Edition, red foxes have no known or perceived territory. They appear in all game maps throughout all seasons.
In Classic, foxes have no known or perceived territory, though they do have set spawn areas.
Nodes
- Main article: Spawners
In the Anniversary Edition, there are few areas where red foxes may consistently spawn, give or take some variance.
Documentation pending.
In Classic, foxes have a few known spawn areas.
In Amethyst Mountain, a consistent spawn can be found by the player-wolf's spawn overlooking Dead Tree, between the large pond and the slopes after starting a new game.
In Slough Creek, a consistent spawn node appears around the wagon wheel.
Kill
In the Anniversary Edition, red foxes possess no health cap and can be killed easily with enough persistence. The carcass of a red fox cannot be consumed.
In Classic, hunting to kill foxes is possible, though they do not have a perceived tiring rate. Players wishing to kill them will benefit from a speed-oriented wolf to commit to this task. They do not retaliate when attacked and will continue to flee until they are either at a safe distance or until they succumb to their injuries. Succeeding for the first time will unlock the Outfox the Fox achievement.
One strategy is to stand a distance away from one facing it until it is done mousing and comes towards the player, since when the fox is in range it will always run forward. This is when the player must bite, and then the fox will be slower and easier to kill.
The carcass of a fox cannot be consumed.
Life Stages & Behavior
In the Anniversary Edition, red foxes are solitary creatures. They are known to roam about and hunt alone. As scavengers, they will naturally gravitate towards any unguarded carcasses to satisfy their hunger. Foxes do not prefer to engage in combat for a carcass, and will instead wait their turn nearby for the other animals to finish eating. They are sometimes observed sleeping and taking naps in open areas. Only adults make an appearance in-game; there is no dimorphism between the sexes, and there are no cubs/pups/kits.
If watched long enough from a safe distance, they may occasionally be seen mousing, though there is no achievement for witnessing this.
In Classic, foxes will spawn and roam at random. They are smaller than coyotes and can be a bit harder to spot in the denser grasses. They can occasionally be seen hunting for mice if observed from a safe distance.
These small canids are passive and will not attack the player or their mate. When approached, it will turn tail and flee. Their agility makes them difficult to catch, being faster than coyotes and bears but slower than cougars. They share the same scavenging behavior as other predators in that they will seek out and consume unguarded carcasses. There is a 50% chance of a fox spawning instead of a coyote.
Competitors
Gray wolves
Gray wolves are a natural competitor to red foxes.
In the Anniversary Edition, the player-wolf and their mate are potential competitors. Apart from guarded carcasses, the mate will autonomously attack foxes at almost every opportunity even if the player-wolf shows no interest in chasing or attacking a red fox.
In Classic, the player-wolf and their mate are potential competitors.
Coyotes
In the Anniversary Edition, coyotes are considered a fox competitor only in the sense that they also hunt snowshoe hares. Each may steal the kill from the other if they happen to lock-on to and chase the same prey. That aside, coyotes will not harm red foxes if they should happen to cross paths.
In Classic, coyotes and foxes do not interact with one another.
Golden eagles
In the Anniversary Edition, golden eagles are considered a fox competitor only in the sense that they also hunt snowshoe hares. Each may steal the kill from the other if they happen to lock-on to and chase the same prey. That aside, golden eagles will not harm red foxes if they should happen to cross paths.
In Classic, golden eagles and foxes do not interact with one another.
