Stranger wolf territory refers to the land which is considered claimed by and belonging to rival wolf packs.
In WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, all wolf-claimed territory is composed of hexes on the world map, with an indicator displayed in a smaller hex mounted at the top of the compass interface. Only the larger and better-established stranger wolf packs possess territories utilize color-coded hexes and scent post spores; visitors such as dispersals do not establish territory and their scents will always be represented in wolf-yellow. For the purposes of this article (and for the sake of accessibility), we will be using the colorblind-safe preset. Stranger wolf territories are represented in purple, cyan, crimson and, used as of the Persistent Packs update, blue and green colors. Each NPC pack's territory has one immoveable home hex (indicated with a large dark circle in the middle) whose claim cannot be fully contested.
Much like the player-wolf's pack and territory, NPC packs utilise scent posts and howls to establish and maintain their own territorial claim. However, because they have the advantage in numbers, they will not be content with the size of their own stake in the land; over the course of gameplay, every single wolf territory will dynamically fluctuate, expanding and shrinking as the wolves belonging to each pack compete to take territory and have it taken from them by their neighbouring rivals.
In the early stages of a new game, NPC packs' territories will always begin with a greatly weakened claim to give the player time to establish territory for their own wolf and his/her pack. If there are any leftover unclaimed hexes after the NPC packs have completed the reclamation phase in a new game, they will be claimed by rivals on the basis of "first come, first served". This phase is skipped entirely when using the Jump to Next Year button in the Pack Info interface. In WolfQuest: Classic, stranger wolf territories are moderately-sized zones wherein the player-wolf can encounter stranger wolves and, once they have gained experience as a wolf as part of the first objective of Amethyst Mountain, is also where they may have a chance of encountering dispersal wolves.
Stranger wolves, stranger wolf packs and their territories are only present in the single-player campaign. In multiplayer, they only appear during the Raise Pups game type.
Wolf territories are identified as large translucent magenta spheres on the world map, or by the white silhouette of a wolf on the compass. Scattered around each are territorial markers made by the stranger wolf inhabitant, marking that territory as their property. The player can use these territory markers to locate the inhabitant by following a stronger trail as indicated by the identifier at the upper-right corner of the screen. The player can locate a resident wolf by their scent trail while in scent view, toggled by pressing the V key. They are represented by spores of yellow urination markers, but only within the boundaries of stranger wolf territory.
Either kind of wolf can spawn in and stand idle until approached to engage them in a turn-based social arena encounter. It's not possible for the player to compete for territory claimed by stranger packs. In Legacy versions of WolfQuest, stranger wolf territories are three moderately-sized areas inhabited by the different packs of stranger wolves found throughout Amethyst Mountain during the single-player campaign. These territories are non-existent in multiplayer where stranger wolves were omitted. Previously, stranger wolves had pre-determined spawn locations; this was changed in 2.0.X so that wolves would instead appear in one of many predefined locations dotted throughout their territory zones.

Packs[]
In the Anniversary Edition, all packs are more or less equals; any perceived aggression is relative to radius. The closer the player's hexes are to a home hex, the more frequently the player will have to visit and renew that hex or those particular hexes to keep that claim in check due to the activity of NPC pack wolves in the area.
In Classic, pack territory does not fluctuate and will always remain the same during the Amethyst Mountain episode.
During the Slough Creek episode, it is unknown which packs occupy the northern and southern territories.
In Legacy versions, pack territory does not fluctuate and will always remain the same during the Amethyst Mountain episode.
During the Slough Creek episode, Druid and Slough wolves are occasionally encountered in social arena encounters, suggesting they are the two packs holding the respective territories to the north and to the south. It's still unknown which pack occupies exactly which territory.
Patrols[]
In the Anniversary Edition, when invading stranger wolf territory, the player-wolf may encounter trails originating from stranger wolves on patrols who are in the process of revisiting hexes to renew their scent posts. If they follow these trails, they may be able to observe their efforts. One or more individuals may be seen roaming throughout their claimed hexes to reinforce their claim, but if they catch wind of an intruder, they may turn hostile and make an attempt to drive out unrelated wolves who do not belong to their pack if neither party is interested in courting the other.
In the event of a skirmish, a patrol of rival pack wolves who happens to encounter the player-wolf will engage in conflict to resolve the matter of which pack will make or keep their stake in that hex. The losing pack wolf/wolves will flee with their tails tucked in submission and their territorial claim in that hex will drop significantly, allowing the winner to more easily take over or renew their scent post in peace. It's unclear whether the same applies to NPC pack vs NPC pack conflicts. Carcasses found within rival territories are likely implied to be kills made and partially consumed by the resident pack itself.
In Legacy versions, a lone patrol wolf only appears during the late stages of the Slough Creek episode to catch and escort the player-wolf and their packmates if they trespass into the southern pack's territory to escort them back to the Sandbar Crossing. No other patrols are seen.

Game Maps[]
Amethyst Mountain[]
In Classic, if a player has cleared their initial objective to hunt elk and attain experience as a wolf, stranger wolves will have a chance of being replaced by dispersal wolves, enabling the player to progress their quest for a mate, which is required to be able to migrate to Slough Creek.
In Legacy versions, if a player has cleared their initial objective to encounter one stranger wolf in each territory, stranger wolves will have a chance of being replaced by dispersal wolves, enabling the player to progress their quest for a mate, which is required to be able to migrate to Slough Creek.
Each territory occupies three different wolf packs, and all three house at least a dispersal wolf spawn. Every territory has a specific pack member that spawns within their designated area.
Once the player has visited and interacted with each one wolf within each territory, dispersal wolves will have a chance of appearing in any of the three territories.
Slough Creek[]
In Classic, players are able to explore either of the two stranger wolf territories without encountering any stranger wolves. The northern territory is wider and the southern territory is taller.
After starting the final mission, the southern pack's territory will expand outwards. The patrol of stranger wolves will only follow the player and their pack; they do not leave their territory. This is done as a to challenge players who chose the Bison Peak or Slough Creek dens, forcing them to go around the rival pack's expanded borders to reach their destination.
In Legacy versions, players are able to explore either of the two stranger wolf territories without encountering a stranger wolf to chase them out. The northern territory is wider and the southern territory is taller.
After starting the final mission, a stranger wolf will always spawn and chase the player away and the southern territory will extend to become larger than it was previously. This is done as a to challenge players who chose the Bison Peak or Slough Creek dens, forcing them to go around the rival pack's expanded borders to reach their destination.

Lost River (Classic)
placeholderIn Classic, as Amethyst Mountain was used as the base for Lost River, much the of the same mechanics remain in effect. Three territories, named Van Winkle, Elevation and Lost River each occupy one of the three available stranger wolf zones. The player may find a mate in Lost River, however, they will be unable to migrate to Slough Creek, and they cannot raise a family in Lost River due to the area being unsuitable for the young pack.

Trivia[]
Aniversary Edition Trivia
- The Slough Creek packs used to have uniquely-colored hexes and scents. This changed in 1.0.7m, likely to maintain colorblind-friendliness or consistency with other game worlds' packs. Prospect Peak were indigo, Junction Butte (SC) were pale green, and Crevice Lake were orchid.
- Rival Pack #4 blue and Rival Pack #5 green territory colors were first implemented in 1.1.0, though they were unused up until the release of 1.1.1.
Classic Trivia
Classic and Legacy Trivia
- The packs depicted in this version -- Druid Peak, Specimen Ridge, and Slough Creek -- were based on real world wolf packs. Today, they are defunct.
- During the final mission, only the southern territory grows. The northern territory remains as-is throughout the duration of your pack's stay in Slough Creek.
Legacy Trivia
- The growth of the southern territory is the only time a stranger wolf will appear to drive you away from their territory. This never happens before the mission is started.
