Lost pups is a random event first introduced in the WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition remake.

In WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, pups who wander too far away from their packmates while nomadic or from the pack's active home site will become lost.

Triggers (Modern)[]

There are a few known triggers. This event may see only one pup lost, or multiple. They can occur at den and rendezvous sites.

The first occurs if the pups are left outside when the player leaves their home site. If the mate decides to accompany the player while they're a short distance away from the home site, the pups will be left exposed. While unattended, they may wander and can wind up far from the pack's active home.

The second occurs with low Pack Affinity; if the player and their mate are away from their pack's home site and affinity has declined below the arrow marking a certain point on the affinity meter, the pups have a higher chance of leaving their safe shelter to explore.

A third instance while at the home site is possible, where one or more pups wander a little too far away from shelter.

Finding Lost Pups (Modern)[]

While in the "lost" state, a puppy's nametag will be hidden. During this time, pressing the N key key will not reveal their nametag nor their current position on the world map.

To find any lost pups, the player will need to track the individual(s) by scent. First, check the pack info interface to recap on which pups are lost; next, focus on finding their most recent trail of footprints and then follow them to their source. Be sure to pay attention to the trail's age as pups may loop over old tracks or cross other animals' trails.

If their scent cannot be found, try howling! The lost pup(s) may or may not respond. If they howl back, they will briefly appear on the compass as a Juvenile wolves yellow howling icon. If they don't respond, don't give up — keep trying until they do.

Once located, it is better to pick up the pup while it is far away from the pack's home site and carry it back. Woof to command it to hide, or (if homeless or living at a rendezvous site) deposit the puppy in a patch of tall grass with or near its siblings.

Repeat until all lost pups have been safely retrieved.

Pups who are lost for a prolonged period of time will eventually die to exposure, to starvation if their hunger was low, or they may be killed by competitors during a predation attack. They have a greater chance of dying if the player sleeps and makes no effort to search for them.

Effects of being Lost (Modern)[]

  • While lost, pups will lose wakefulness quicker than usual.
  • Since pups will not "teleport" around during sleep, lost pups will still stay within the general area of their last known location even after a nap.
    • Note however that sleeping while pups are lost are will likely cause them to die of exposure/predators while the pack is sleeping.

Behavior of pups while lost[]

  • Pups who are found from being lost will try to make their way toward the den/site (including the mobile “den” created while nomadic)
    • They will stop and stay still if their movement causes them to become distant from a player and become lost again.
  • Lost pups who are near a player will move toward them, especially when sleeping is performed to accelerate time.
    • Lost pups will still eat regurgitation and meat (if possible) nearby.
  • Lost pups near the den during a predation attack will likely be targeted by the predator
    • Though they are vulnerable to predator attacks, a lost pup far from the den/rendezvous site will not be directly attacked by passing predators. Therefore if watched carefully by a player, these pups are become relatively safe from predation.

Tips (Modern)[]

  • If their trail is confusing or missing, send all pups into shelter, then howl. Lost pups may respond to the howl, and the sound can be followed to its source!
  • The mate may occasionally find lost pups. However, this might be determined by its personality, and not all mates will bring back a lost puppy they have found.
  • It is equally important not to panic and to act quickly; lost pups can still be killed by predators or starvation.
  • Sleeping or passing time will not prevent pups' tracks from fading.
    • All packmates will sleep at the same time. This still applies to lost pups.

Loss prevention (Modern)[]

The best way to prevent pups from becoming lost are simple.

  • Always send the pups into shelter if the mate accompanies the player away from the den.
    • Alternatively, target the mate and woof at them, then watch and wait for them to turn around and go home.
  • If the player needs their mate's help, do one of the following:
    • Send the pups into the den, then target and whine at the mate. Wait until all pups are inside the den before leaving.
    • If the mate was left at home, perform a secondary howl while away from the den. (Double-tap the H key key, Xbox Xbox X button button, or PlayStation PlayStation Square button button.)
      • If the mate is babysitting, they will automatically send the pups into shelter before joining the player.
  • Always monitor pack affinity. (Blue bar along the left side of the wolf badge.) If it's close to the arrow indicator, go back to the home site, and socialise with the pups.
    • Howling when the mate or pups initiate a howl offers a good boost to affinity.
    • Only leave when pack affinity is substantially higher than the arrow.
  • If the player decides to stay home, watch the pups carefully. Those who stray away from the den much farther than their siblings are more likely to become lost.

Trivia[]

  • Two Core achievements related to lost pups are Lost in the Wilderness and Fetching the Prodigal Pup.
  • The ability for lost pups to howl back at the player was added in Early Access 1.0.8g.
