Game Types, sometimes called game modes, are a specific set of objectives selected for multiplayer-only sessions. They allow a host player to choose a specific quest or campaign arc they would like to play online with others. A game type cannot be changed on-the-fly and will require the host to end their game to choose another.
In WolfQuest: Classic, game types replace the default sandbox with a selection of options.
General Notes[]
In Classic, across all game types unless otherwise noted in its own subsection, the following will apply throughout the session:
- Death is not permanent, allowing affected players to respawn with low health after a brief countdown.
- There is an experience penalty for each death.
In Legacy versions, unless otherwise noted in its own subsection, the following will apply throughout the session:
- Death is not permanent, which allowed affected players to respawn with full health after a brief camera pan.
Game Types[]

In Classic, hosts can choose between one of two game types.
In Legacy versions, hosts only had one nameless game type: "Pack Life". It did not appear during session configuration and was always enabled by default.
Pack Life[]
In Classic, this is the standard survival game mode. There are no objectives, allowing players to freely explore, hunt, and roleplay without the threat of stranger wolves and their territories. This game mode is commonly used for general activities, such as:
- Survival and/or hunting
- Experience-farming
- Roleplay (realistic and/or fantasy)
- Casual chat
- Hide-and-seek
- Competitive sessions, within the game's limitations
- Cooperative sessions, within the game's limitations
In Legacy versions, this was the default option. It was the only available game type albeit nameless prior to the release of 2.7. It served as a survival sandbox minus stranger wolf packs and their territories. There were no other modes, even long after the introduction of Slough Creek due to development ceasing for a couple of years after funding ran out.
Back in the its day, players would get up to all sorts of activities within the game's limitations. Chatting, roleplaying, exploring, hunting, survival... whether fantasy, fiction and imaginative or well within the realm of realism, if it was possible, players would do their best to make their multiplayer ambitions work.
Experience points were stored in single player save data. Owing to the lack of per-wolf save files and combined with XP being absence in multiplayer, experience-farming was non-existent.
Raise Pups[]
In Classic, this is the complete Slough Creek episode arc, bringing the single player experience online. Players must find a den, mark their territory, where they will raise, feed, and defend their pack's shared litter, and make the journey to a rendezvous site where their game will end.
Clearing the episode in an online session isn't any different from clearing it offline, aside from a few extra players howling at its conclusion. Beyond that, there is no episode 3 present in this version of the game.
In Legacy versions, pups did not exist in multiplayer.

Classic Trivia
- Following the introduction of individual wolf save files and the separation of values being stored only in single- or multiplayer save files, experience farming was able to take off.
- Floppy is a popular Lost River method, due to her placement in a small enclosure and an exploit allowing players to potentially glitch through the enclosure wall.
- Other popular methods include killing bull moose and bull elk, and driving away grizzly bears.
- Raise Pups is the only game type in which players can claim territory and urinate.
