Currently, the only state available to the player is that of their adult gray wolf avatar. There are no other states available, nor is it known whether or not this will ever change.

Trivia[]

  • During 2.7 beta testing, an early, unreleased game type appeared in multiplayer.
    • It was removed in subsequent builds because selecting it changed nothing, effectively rendering it unplayable. The team were unable to get it working in the Legacy codebase. Selecting and proceeding with it had no negative effects.
    • The concept for this particular game type has not yet re-emerged, though it may be possible in the new WQ3 codebase.
  • Developer's blogs posted during early development for the modern game suggest the codebase overhaul/rewrite may mean this is now better supported than it was with the Legacy codebase, due to it being shared with Classic.
    • Specifically, this was mentioned regarding pup playability.[1]
      • This may have been the basis for the family tree implementation.
    • It remains unclear whether any other wolf life stages, or even any other animals per Dave's mention in the referenced post, will ever become playable.

  1. Will we have an option to play as a pup or a yearling?
We fully understand how much players want this! And we think it would be fun too. Our new codebase will make it much easier than before to make any animal playable, so we expect to make playable pups at some point. However, pups are pretty limited in what they can do, so we know we’ll have to create some special game mechanics to make pups worth playing. So playing as pups will have to come later.
