Not to be confused with Age, Elder Wolf, Experience, or Pack Roles.

The implementation differs greatly between major revisions. They are not the same.

In WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, unlockable ranks are absent. It is unknown whether they will return due to their former attribution to experience, which were replaced by age perks.

Currently, only a player-wolf's age (which may be advanced with each annual birthday opportunity in early summer) can be used to tell how experienced another player is, provided they are not an ironwolf or an elder wolf, as neither of these are eligible for use in multiplayer servers.

In WolfQuest: Classic, ranks are a new, progressively-earned form of achievement introduced in version 2.7.3p2. They are based off of the amount of experience each individual wolf the player has created and played has earned over time. There are a total of eight ranks to unlock.

In single-player, the player can see their wolf's rank at any time in the Pack Stats interface — because experience is saved per-wolf, it carries over to any game world they play in, and any new experience earned in a different location will always be saved.

In multiplayer, ranks are displayed to all players upon entering a session. A player can view their own experience and rank in the Pack Stats interface in any game world at any time. Other players' experience totals and ranks cannot be viewed from this interface and will only be seen when they join the session.

Unlocking Ranks

Ranks are purely cosmetic. Other than boasting/bragging rights, they offer no gameplay benefits or perks! Ranks are automatically applied the moment a player's wolf has reached the minimum experience requirement. It is not possible for players to manually define their wolf's rank. Similarly, although four of them are based on actual wolf ages, they do not change the avatar's appearance nor will it mature; the player is always in control of a two-year-old gray wolf.

Main article: Community Forum

Community Forum Ranks are determined either by group memberships or by post count. Whether posts increment the user's post counter or not is determined by the administrator per-forum; users are discouraged from posting solely to increase post count as this is seen as (and commonly resulted in) SPAM, which is actionable by moderators.

Post Count Ranks

This is the default "rank" for any groups that do not have their own pre-defined rank.

Usergroup Ranks

Main article: Usergroups

Group-specific ranks require that the user has set the defined group as their default, else they can contact an administrator to request their rank if another takes priority in their current default usergroup.

Trivia

  • A common misconception about wild wolves is that they have ranks or hierarchies. (Alpha, beta, omega, etc.) This is false.[1] Most packs consist of related (family) members, with the breeding male and female being the dominant/breeding pair responsible for establishing the pack. The offspring produced and raised by these two wolves form the pack's members.
    • It is true that unrelated individuals may sometimes be adopted into a non-natal pack.
    • "Alpha" is an accepted term in the wild when referring to large wolf packs with multiple breeders.

Anniversary Edition Trivia

Classic Trivia

  • The artwork depicting each rank was made by Sambhur.[2] These images were also added to the community forums' avatar gallery.
    • These ranks were loosely modelled after and trimmed-down versions of the ranks utilised on the community forum.[3]

Legacy Trivia

Community Forum Trivia

  • Post ranks were polled for change in 2010.[4] The resulting twelve ranks were decided by the community.
  • The administrator rank badge was created for use by volunteer administrators, since WolfQuest Team members use their blue-grey rank badge when their names are red.
  • Forum rank badges (images) were made by Neamara and added to all applicable forum ranks on 23-Apr-2015. They are periodically updated when needed as time goes on, or whenever new groups are created.
